LUKE SHAWLER | BIOSTATISTICS INTERN | HARVARD UNIVERSITY

Summer and Fall 2024 Luke Shawler, MS

My name is Luke Shawler, a Summer 2024 Biostatistics intern at PROMETRIKA. I am also currently pursuing an MS in Biostatistics from Harvard. During my summer at PROMETRIKA, I was supervised by our Associate Director, Biostatistics and Leader of DMC Services. In this role, I had the opportunity to work on a variety of enriching projects. In particular, I contributed to the preparation of data monitoring committee (DMC) reports. This role challenged me to develop my problem-solving skills and required the synthesis of feedback from both the study sponsor and the DMC. The position also pushed me to further develop my written and oral communication skills as I adhered to stringent deadlines.

For a particular DMC Services project, I conducted statistical review of tables, listings, and figures (TLFs) output and also was responsible for unblinding treatment assignment in order to create a closed DMC report. In addition to DMC work, I am grateful that I had the opportunity to help develop a randomization plan, provide feedback on the statistical components of a protocol, and draft a statistical analysis plan for an interim analysis. My favorite aspect of the internship was that I not only contributed to a cross section of clinical trial work, but I also learned and received support from so many individuals. This includes my fellow interns, my direct supervisor, the leadership team, and the CEO. This internship served as a wonderful extension of my education and helped solidify my career path in biostatistics and clinical trials.
